The history of Modesto dates back to 1870 with a small, one-mile square windblown railroad settlement with few trees or vegetation. However, in a matter of 40 years, the population of the city had increased to over 4,500, and soon it became known as the “Rose City” and the “Garden City” because of its abundance of rose bushes and well-manicured greenery. The discovery that Modesto’s fertile soil and mild climate were well suited for growing a wide variety of crops triggered both an economic and population explosion. Soon the city became one of “the most metropolitan and classy of its size in California.”
Even though it has grown into a large city, Modesto has in many ways continued its small town way of life with an emphasis on the family and community. More than 300 service clubs and organizations exist in the area, and the city sponsors on an annual basis a number of theater productions and concerts at one of the city’s numerous indoor and outdoor venues. Community events such as a weekly Certified Farmers Market and a food-tasting “Downtown Sampler” event attract both residents and visitors alike. Because of its mild climate and fertile soil, some of the nation’s best produce, dairy and poultry products, fruits and nuts are grown in the area, and agriculture and food processing continue to be key to the success of the economy. However, a growth in the commercial, industrial, and service sectors have led to an increase in new business and employment opportunities in the city. The downtown area has undergone a great deal of revitalization, and with the establishment of a 24,000 square foot convention/community center and a large number of retailers, restaurants and service-based businesses in the area, it now serves as the center of strategic future growth of the city. Due to its affordable housing, small-town atmosphere and close proximity to recreational and major economic centers in the bay area, the city of Modesto is the perfect choice for all types of families and both the young and old alike. |
